5 Reasons Why You Need A Weimaraner

At WeimLife we love Weimaraners. They are an incredibly fun dog that sticks by your side and shows an immense amount of love whenever they can. While they may be a handful for new dog owners, we cannot recommend a Weimaraner enough to anyone who wants an active, lovable dog. Here are 5 reasons why you need a Weimaraner.

1. They are incredibly loyal

Weimaraners aren’t called the “Grey Ghost” for nothing. They have a tendency to become shadows, following their owners around or lying at their owners’ feet just within patting range. Weims are certainly loyal family dogs. These dogs love to get involved with anything the family is doing, being right there beside everyone.

The Weimaraner does suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for too long. They can become distraught leading to destruction or excessive barking. To help prevent this you will need to help them get used to being alone during the day as puppies. If you need to go on a long holiday, ensure that your Weim has a great babysitter.

2. You can take them anywhere

Often you don’t have to leave your Weimaraner at home, especially if you go on outdoor adventures. Weimaraners love the outdoors. Take them on hikes, runs, trips to the beach, or trips to the park, and they will love every moment. As Weimaraners have more stamina than the average dog, these trips will offer the perfect adventure to burn it off.

3. They are very clever

Weims are an excellent dog to teach tricks to. They are incredibly intelligent allowing them to learn quickly, which can give quite the head start for any training as a puppy. Their intelligence even allows Weimaraners to learn some clever tricks on their own. Often, they very easily learn how to open doors and steal some extra food.

However, with this intelligence comes stubbornness. While Weimaraners do love to please you they also love to have their own way. You will need to constantly reinforce who is in charge even after initial puppy training. Stand firm on your boundaries otherwise your Weimaraner will take over the house. Be prepared for some fun hijinks when training a Weimaraner, they may be clever, but they are still very dopey.

4. They are easy to groom

Dirt seems to fall off a Weimaraner’s coat. Which is great, because they love rolling around in it. Their splendid grey coat is silky, short and easy to maintain. Generally, a Weimaraner only needs brushing once a week as a minimum and should have their toenails trimmed. This is especially important if you take them hiking.

5. They have a lot of stamina

If you have ever wanted a jogging buddy then a Weimaraner should be at the top of your list. They have a lot of stamina making them perfect for jogging with. A well trained Weimaraner will stick by your side and flourish during a good run.

Weimaraners tend to need a lot of exercise. They are, after all, hunting dogs bread for stamina. So you should try to give them at least 2 hours of exercise a day to keep them happy. If you and your family do a lot of exercise anyway then this will be no problem. Weims are perfect for the active family.
