What Is A Weimaraner?

Weimaraners are a breed of dog originating in Germany. They were originally bred for hunting big game in Europe before. When the big game disappeared from the continent around the 1800s the Weimaraner was bred into an excellent small game hunter. In the 1920s the Weimeraner was introduced to the United States for the first time where it became extremely popular and spread to the rest of the world.

Weimaraners are one of the taller dogs of the gundog group, they are fast, and have excellent stamina. They are extremely loyal, making themselves at home amongst the family. However, they do require training early on as they are stubborn. Weims are very clever and make excellent companions.

Weimaraner Temperament And Physical Features

Weimaramers are famous for their elegant, aristocratic appearance, and devoted and loving persona. You will be hard pressed to find a breed more loyal and affectionate than the Weimaramer.

Temperament

A Weim's favourite place is within touching range of its adopted family. They love affection, never wanting to leave their owners sides. Often they will be like a shadow, always at your feet or following you around. If you plan on leaving your dog alone for hours on end maybe look for a different breed, Weims can get lonely (and destructive) when left alone for too long.

Weimaraners have a lot of energy and stamina. They can rust fast and far, which made them excellent hunting dogs. Make sure you are giving them a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, or they will do it in destructive ways back home.

Ensure that you train your Weim puppy well. These dogs are very clever and stubborn, so if not well trained, will attempt to test your boundaries.

Physical Appearance

Weimaraners commonly have a smooth mouse grey to silver-grey coat. Their coat is short and single coloured, however, they can sometimes come in a longer-haired variant. The longhair Weimaraner is recognised everywhere but the U.S.A.

Their coat is generally easy to clean, requiring little maintenance. It is best to brush them weekly, if they are long-haired they may require more brushing. Dirt will seem to simply fall off their coat.

Weims are a floppy-eared dog, and so, as with any dog with this ear-type are prone to infections. Ensure that you check their ears regularly.

Hunting Instincts

As Weimaraners are hunting dogs they have a strong hunting instinct. Untrained, they will chase after almost anything, and if it is small and furry, may go for the kill. It is important to train them as puppies so that they learn how to behave themselves around other animals.

If you do have a cat, hamster, chicken, rat, or bird, it is best to go for another dog breed.

Despite this, Weimaraners are incredibly loving and offer the perfect companion to anyone who is prepared to train and exercise them. Once you own a Weim, and understand the responsibilities, you will never want to part with him or her.
