So, you are thinking of getting your first Weim! You can’t wait to take home one of these wonderful grey pups. You must have known somewhere that Weimaraners will perfectly fit your active and outdoorsy lifestyle. You prefer trained and intelligent dogs and loyal companions. And you also love a cuddle bug who will not mind your constant attention.

You have zeroed in the perfect dog for you. But, before you go ahead and pick the cutest puppy, you must learn how to care for them first. Here are the basic care requirements for Weimaraner puppies:
They will need their exercise – Weimaraners are hunting dogs. They are bred for action and endurance. Weim puppies are especially rambunctious. They will need regular exercises, at least twice a day or two hours long. They love the outdoors, take them for walks or runs. Engage them in active play and other stimulating activities.
Start obedience training early – These huge grey wonders are intelligent as they are stubborn. You have to establish early on that you are the leader of the pack. Start obedience training early. There are a lot of puppy training centres that could help set the proper behaviour of your Weimaraner. These intelligent dogs love learning new tricks.

The Weimaraner diet – Weim puppies burn calories as they pack it in. Thus, you will need to feed them more often. From eight to twelve weeks, your young Weims will need four packed meals. From three to six months, feed your Weim three square meals, and two heaping bowls until he or she is one year old. Older Weimaraners can go with one huge meal or two smaller meals a day. Aside from recommended dog food, they also love wolfing in cooked eggs, fruits and vegetables, and cheese. Make sure fresh clean water is available at all times.
Find a great vet – Make sure that your Weim gets all the necessary veterinary care. Find a good and reputable vet, preferably referred by other Weim parents. Your new puppy will need his or her deworming and vaccine shots, skin and coat care, and overall health checks. You will also have to set the schedule for your pup’s spay/neuter procedure.
Establish a grooming routine – Start establishing your puppy’s grooming routine early. Make it part of their obedience training. Brushing off their teeth, clipping nails, and brushing should be done regularly. You will never want to wrestle a huge dog trying to clip his nails or brush his teeth.

They can be clingy – Weimaraners love attention and will demand your presence at all times. They will be your shadow and may develop separation anxiety if not trained early. If you have to leave them alone at home, make sure you get a good sitter or another animal to keep him company. Another large dog is recommended as Weims don’t have much tolerance for smaller dogs or cats. Provide a cosy spot – While their soft short hair coats are great in keeping them cool during strenuous activities, it is not designed to keep them warm during extremely cold weather. They might get cold at night and would need a warm and cosy bed to sleep on. Keep them warm with those cute vests, hoodies, and sweaters.
